Just three months pregnant with her first child, Aabha Brown is already feeling the angst of an expecting mom just in time for Mother’s Day.

None of her clothes fit.

“This is not the time to retreat into feeling fat and ugly,” says Brown, director of cultural health initiatives for the American Heart Association. “It’s much different now than when my mom was pregnant and had no options.”

Brown has been pleased with the assortment of fashions for pregnant women but says she’s looking forward to the months ahead.

“Things naturally shift as your body gets prepared, so you want to feel good in what you’re wearing,” she said. “The in-between stage has been the hardest because you’re not too far along for maternity, but none of your clothes fit. I already have a swimsuit picked out for the summer.”

At Pickles & Ice Cream, owner Dawn Wilson says there are many Mother’s Day gift options for expecting moms. Her favorites are stylish pajamas - not muumuus - because many women “won’t buy them themselves.” Prices are $49-$99.

She also sells novelty T-shirts with sayings such as “Say Hello to My Little Friend” (shown above) and “I Can Grow People” at $40-$69. And the Hot Slings pouch ($47-$63), a sling to carry a baby in the fetal position comfortably against the mother’s body, is a huge seller.

“Really, you should celebrate and feel special every day,” Wilson said. “Be it a first-time mom or a mom on her second or third child, it’s a day to celebrate.” - Read more at Chron.com

SYDNEY (AFP) — Hollywood star Cate Blanchett has given birth to a son, a spokesman for the Australian actress said Monday.

The baby is the third child for the 38-year-old Oscar-winner and her playwright husband Andrew Upton. He was born Sunday.

“Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton have a baby boy, Ignatius Martin Upton,” a spokesman for the Sydney Theatre Company, where the couple are joint artistic directors, told AFP.

“All are well and very happy,” he added.

The baby is the third son for the Sydney-based couple, who already have Dashiell, six, and Roman, three.

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis is the new
mother of a baby girl, PEOPLE has confirmed.

“De Laurentiis and husband Todd Thompson welcomed their first child, a healthy baby girl, on Saturday March 29 in Los Angeles,” her rep tells PEOPLE. “Jade Marie De Laurentiis Thompson weighed in at 5lbs, 13oz.”

The baby is the first for the Food Network star and Today show contributor, 37, and her husband since 2003, Todd Thompson, 44, a clothing designer for Anthropologie.

“When I found out I was pregnant I was in complete shock,” De Laurentiis said last November, when the baby news was first announced. “I truly didn’t believe it. I honestly thought, ‘There has got to be a mistake.’ “

Giada told Redbook in January she’s hoping to pass on the love of food to her daughter, but she is being cautious. She said, “Watch, I will probably end up with a child who not only doesn’t care about food but doesn’t ever want to set foot in a kitchen!”

In February, she stated of the physical changes coming over her; including her sudden cravings for steak! “I couldn’t be more excited about being pregnant. I can’t wait to meet her.”

Maternity Wear Prepares to Reclaim Its Turf

Women’s Wear Daily, February 27, 2008

Select Excerpts:

“Keeping their pre-pregnancy personal style has never been easier for expectant moms – and not just because baby-doll styles can hide growing bellies. Until recently, maternity styles tended to lag behind ready-to-wear by six months to a year, but that gap is shrinking according to Song Pardue, founder of the Pickles & Ice Cream chain of maternity stores throughout the southeast. That could be, in part, because more ready-to-wear companies are launching their own maternity lines. This has been especially true in the premium denim category where Citizens of Humanity has their own maternity line as does Paige Jeans, Chip & Pepper and, beginning in March, James Jeans.”

Song Pardue agrees: “Look at what the fashion magazines are starting
to hint at for fall. The tunic is still in, but it’s becoming more structured.
People are still doing leggings and skinny jeans, but with tops that are
more slimming. Fall fashions are inspired by menswear and that’s good
news for maternity because you can’t buy the tailored look at Banana
Republic and wear it through nine months of pregnancy.”

Pardue of Pickles & Cream confirms this: “Designer jeans continue to sell like crazy. They’re more than a basic; they’re a staple. It’s not even a splurge anymore. People are just buying them.”

Successful maternity retailers understand how their customer is different from the non-pregnant shopper and how she’s just the same.

Store: Pickles & Ice Cream
Where: Dallas & Plano, TX and seven other Locations

The philosophy: I think what makes our stores so special and different from others is our approach to customer service. We never push items that don’t flatter and we wardrobe our mommies according to both their personal style and their lifestyle needs. I think women appreciate our laidback ‘girlfriend-to-girlfriend’ approach. Our goal is to gain customers rather than to make sales. We believe that sales naturally follow excellent service.

Lipstick Jungle’s Kim Raver on Motherhood

Kim Raver: What every new mom must know

credit: redbook, celebritybabyblog

With Leo, it’s gotten incrementally easier. I’ve started being okay with the sleepless nights, because I know I won’t be nursing every two hours for the rest of my life.

And my husband and I are so much more relaxed as parents. Whereas whenever Luke cried, I was in complete angst and stomach turning, ‘Oh my God, what’s not right? What’s happening?’

I remember Luke getting a cold when he was a few weeks old, and I was a basket case. And then recently Leo got a cold — and he got a cold. With Luke, I was so worried about every little thing. With Leo, who I hear crying in the other room right now, I’m like, “Okay, let’s solve the problem…What is it?’

Study: Folic Acid Reduces Premature Births

Study: Folic Acid Reduces Premature Births
Research tracked 35,000 women between 1999 and 2002

credit

WASHINGTON - “Women who take folic acid supplements for at least a year before becoming pregnant can greatly reduce their risk of delivering a baby prematurely, researchers said on Thursday.

Folic acid, a B vitamin, already is known to prevent major birth defects that involve a baby’s brain or spine. This study shows it may provide another benefit — cutting down on premature births in which babies have less time to develop in the womb and are more likely to experience serious medical problems.

The study tracked about 35,000 pregnant women between 1999 and 2002 who disclosed their folic acid intake.

It found that women who took folic acid supplements for at least a year before pregnancy cut their chances for very early pre-term births — 20 to 28 weeks into the pregnancy — by 70 percent compared to other women.”
