Just three months pregnant with her first child, Aabha Brown is already feeling the angst of an expecting mom just in time for Mother’s Day.

None of her clothes fit.

“This is not the time to retreat into feeling fat and ugly,” says Brown, director of cultural health initiatives for the American Heart Association. “It’s much different now than when my mom was pregnant and had no options.”

Brown has been pleased with the assortment of fashions for pregnant women but says she’s looking forward to the months ahead.

“Things naturally shift as your body gets prepared, so you want to feel good in what you’re wearing,” she said. “The in-between stage has been the hardest because you’re not too far along for maternity, but none of your clothes fit. I already have a swimsuit picked out for the summer.”

At Pickles & Ice Cream, owner Dawn Wilson says there are many Mother’s Day gift options for expecting moms. Her favorites are stylish pajamas - not muumuus - because many women “won’t buy them themselves.” Prices are $49-$99.

She also sells novelty T-shirts with sayings such as “Say Hello to My Little Friend” (shown above) and “I Can Grow People” at $40-$69. And the Hot Slings pouch ($47-$63), a sling to carry a baby in the fetal position comfortably against the mother’s body, is a huge seller.

“Really, you should celebrate and feel special every day,” Wilson said. “Be it a first-time mom or a mom on her second or third child, it’s a day to celebrate.” - Read more at Chron.com

Boob Goes To Hollywood

Boob Maternity Brings Out Celebumoms’ Curves

By Natasha Burton - Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Tori Spelling, Minnie Driver, Lisa Marie Presley and Camila Alves (Matthew McConaughey’s girlfriend) got early Mother’s Day gifts this year-clothing from chic line Boob Maternity.

Boob was created in the winter of 1999 when founder Mia Seipel saw her sister nurse her newborn baby in a park in Stockholm, waist bare to the icy northern wind. She decided it should be every mother’s right to nurse in comfort and in style. The solution was Boob Nursing–a Swedish patented innovation that will make you look great. Being pregnant with her first child gave Mia inspiration to expand into a line of clothing, and so Boob Maternity was born. No doubt, celebumoms like Angelina and Jessica, will enjoy wearing this line during their pregnancy, and afterwards, when they’re nursing,
too. - Read more at ModernMom.com

Boob’s big Hollywood-breakthrough happened when actress
Minnie Driver was spotted by the daily paper Metro, wearing our popular tie-back dress. We’re therefore very happy to announce that we still have this style in stock!

Greenville’s Katie Darby Gives the Scoop…

Time for a change

Maternity fashions catch up with today’s trendy moms-to-be

By Cheryl P. Allen • STAFF WRITER • March 27, 2008 • GreenvilleOnline.com
Who says you can’t be pregnant and fashionable at the same time? Today’s mothers-to-be don’t have to fret about looking stylish.

Maternity clothes have evolved drastically over the years, adding flair and elegance to pregnancy, said Katie Darby, owner of Pickles & Ice Cream on Augusta Road.

Darby, who opened her store eight years ago, said she was inspired by conversations with pregnant friends who were frustrated over trying to find trendy clothing for their changing bodies. “I actually opened the store before I had children,” said Darby, now a mother of three young children. “So then, when I did have babies, I had something to wear.”

In the past, options were very limited, Darby said. “It was always a season or two behind the regular women’s fashion. Everything was very loose, big, long panels … extremely frumpy, a lot of button-up tops and not much fun. You had to completely change your style and just wear what pregnant people wore. Now you don’t have to change your style.”

Maternity Wear Prepares to Reclaim Its Turf

Women’s Wear Daily, February 27, 2008

Select Excerpts:

“Keeping their pre-pregnancy personal style has never been easier for expectant moms – and not just because baby-doll styles can hide growing bellies. Until recently, maternity styles tended to lag behind ready-to-wear by six months to a year, but that gap is shrinking according to Song Pardue, founder of the Pickles & Ice Cream chain of maternity stores throughout the southeast. That could be, in part, because more ready-to-wear companies are launching their own maternity lines. This has been especially true in the premium denim category where Citizens of Humanity has their own maternity line as does Paige Jeans, Chip & Pepper and, beginning in March, James Jeans.”

Song Pardue agrees: “Look at what the fashion magazines are starting
to hint at for fall. The tunic is still in, but it’s becoming more structured.
People are still doing leggings and skinny jeans, but with tops that are
more slimming. Fall fashions are inspired by menswear and that’s good
news for maternity because you can’t buy the tailored look at Banana
Republic and wear it through nine months of pregnancy.”

Pardue of Pickles & Cream confirms this: “Designer jeans continue to sell like crazy. They’re more than a basic; they’re a staple. It’s not even a splurge anymore. People are just buying them.”

Successful maternity retailers understand how their customer is different from the non-pregnant shopper and how she’s just the same.

Store: Pickles & Ice Cream
Where: Dallas & Plano, TX and seven other Locations
Who: Song Pardue, founder & CEO

The philosophy: I think what makes our stores so special and different from others is our approach to customer service. We never push items that don’t flatter and we wardrobe our mommies according to both their personal style and their lifestyle needs. I think women appreciate our laidback ‘girlfriend-to-girlfriend’ approach. Our goal is to gain customers rather than to make sales. We believe that sales naturally follow excellent service.

‘Mama’s to Be’ Glam it up at the Oscars!

”Mum” was the word at this year’s Oscars…

Especially for Nicole Kidman, Jessica Alba,
and double Academy Award nominee Cate Blanchett…
What was the hottest accessory to be seen with at this year’s Academy Awards?

That’s right. A baby bump.

Nicole Kidman,  shows off her simple and elegant style with this Balenciaga gown and Bottega Veneta clutch. Of course, simplicity was the best option, considering the focus was on her 1,399-carat diamond necklace designed by L’Wren Scott!

(We can’t help but be reminded of this gorgeous satin
Ripe evening gown that we carry in our boutiques…)
