“This is not the time to retreat into feeling fat and ugly,” says Brown, director of cultural health initiatives for the American Heart Association. “It’s much different now than when my mom was pregnant and had no options.”

Brown has been pleased with the assortment of fashions for pregnant women but says she’s looking forward to the months ahead.

“Things naturally shift as your body gets prepared, so you want to feel good in what you’re wearing,” she said. “The in-between stage has been the hardest because you’re not too far along for maternity, but none of your clothes fit. I already have a swimsuit picked out for the summer.”

At Pickles & Ice Cream, owner Dawn Wilson says there are many Mother’s Day gift options for expecting moms. Her favorites are stylish pajamas - not muumuus - because many women “won’t buy them themselves.” Prices are $49-$99.

Amy Poehler and Will Arnett Expecting

“I’m great with kids,” she told the New York Daily News earlier this month.
“I think I’m still a big giant kid. I understand them and usually we’re the same size. I think I understand the way they look up at the world. I get it.”

April 29, 2008 (NEW YORK) - Amy Poehler, now playing the title role in “Baby Mama,” is one in real life as well. The actress, who co-stars with Tina Fey in the hit pregnancy comedy, is expecting her first child with husband Will Arnett, the couple’s publicist said Monday. The couple married in 2003. The baby is due this fall.

Poehler, 36, is a cast member on NBC’s ”Saturday Night Live” who has been imitating Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) during the campaign season. She co-starred with Arnett in the 2007 comedy ”Blades of Glory.”

Though known for her boisterous characters, Poehler recently told the Sun-Times she wouldn’t be a screamer in the delivery room. “I would go silent,” she said. “I would be very zen and in touch with my inner peace.”

SYDNEY (AFP) — Hollywood star Cate Blanchett has given birth to a son, a spokesman for the Australian actress said Monday.

The baby is the third child for the 38-year-old Oscar-winner and her playwright husband Andrew Upton. He was born Sunday.

“Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton have a baby boy, Ignatius Martin Upton,” a spokesman for the Sydney Theatre Company, where the couple are joint artistic directors, told AFP.

“All are well and very happy,” he added.

The baby is the third son for the Sydney-based couple, who already have Dashiell, six, and Roman, three.

The baby’s arrival comes just days before Blanchett is due to attend a national summit for the future organised by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The glamorous actress is scheduled to chair a session titled “Towards a creative Australia” at the Australia 2020 Summit in Canberra this weekend.

Rudd said Monday that Blanchett would still attend the summit, for which she had helped select 100 of the 1,000 participants, but had requested an additional co-chair for her session.

“I want to extend my best wishes to Ms Blanchett and her family and thank her for her contribution to the Australia 2020 Summit thus far,” Rudd said in a statement.

Blanchett was nominated for two Academy Awards this year for her work in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and the acclaimed Bob Dylan biopic “I’m Not There,” but she failed to take home a statue.

Blanchett won an Oscar for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in the 2004 film “The Aviator”. - Read more

Dieting while nursing is fine, but go slow
Lose weight gradually (1 to 2 pounds a week) by combining a healthy, low-fat diet with moderate exercise. Rapid weight loss can pose a danger to your baby because it releases toxins — normally stored in your body fat — into the bloodstream, increasing the amount of these contaminants that wind up in your milk. If you’re losing more than 2 pounds a week after the first six weeks, you need to take in more calories.If you think you must wean your baby to lose weight, rest assured: Nursing helps to deplete the fat deposited during pregnancy to prepare you for lactation. So some new moms find the weight just seems to fall off while they’re breastfeeding. Still, count on taking ten months to a year to return to your pre-pregnancy weight. And don’t even think about trying to lose weight until at least six weeks after your baby is born. Limiting what you eat in the early weeks of lactation may reduce your milk supply.

Limit your consumption of some fish
In March 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued new guidelines for how women who are trying to conceive, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children can limit their exposure to mercury in fish. They now advise eating no more than 6 ounces (about one serving) of canned albacore or “white” tuna a week.According to the FDA/EPA guidelines, you should also limit yourself to 12 ounces a week (about two servings) of canned “light” tuna and other cooked fish. And you should completely avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish (also called golden or white snapper). More conservative experts recommend that you avoid tuna steak (fresh or frozen), orange roughy, Spanish mackerel, marlin, and grouper because these fish are at the top of the food chain and contain the highest levels of mercury.

Drink plenty of water to stay well-hydrated
When you breastfeed, your body is shedding excess fluid. Although it won’t affect your milk supply, you should aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water or liquid a day to stay hydrated. Another rule of thumb is to “drink to thirst” — that is, drink whenever you feel the need. Avoid caffeine, which can dehydrate you.

Check your iron levels
Even if you took a vitamin-mineral supplement when you were pregnant, you might not need one now that you’ve had your baby. However, many health professionals recommend continuing a prenatal supplement, which has extra iron, while nursing. Or, if a blood test reveals that your iron levels are low, your doctor may recommend that you take an iron supplement instead. If you do continue with a general vitamin supplement, remember that it can’t make up for poor eating habits. Strive to eat a well-balanced, varied diet.

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis is the new
mother of a baby girl, PEOPLE has confirmed.

“De Laurentiis and husband Todd Thompson welcomed their first child, a healthy baby girl, on Saturday March 29 in Los Angeles,” her rep tells PEOPLE. “Jade Marie De Laurentiis Thompson weighed in at 5lbs, 13oz.”

The baby is the first for the Food Network star and Today show contributor, 37, and her husband since 2003, Todd Thompson, 44, a clothing designer for Anthropologie.

“When I found out I was pregnant I was in complete shock,” De Laurentiis said last November, when the baby news was first announced. “I truly didn’t believe it. I honestly thought, ‘There has got to be a mistake.’ “

Giada told Redbook in January she’s hoping to pass on the love of food to her daughter, but she is being cautious. She said, “Watch, I will probably end up with a child who not only doesn’t care about food but doesn’t ever want to set foot in a kitchen!”

In February, she stated of the physical changes coming over her; including her sudden cravings for steak! “I couldn’t be more excited about being pregnant. I can’t wait to meet her.”
